What is sun allergy?

Sun allergy is a term commonly used to describe photosensitivity, a condition in which the skin reacts excessively to sunlight that would normally be well tolerated. This heightened sensitivity can lead to photodermatoses, which typically present as a sun-induced rash with redness, itching, or small bumps. Photoallergy is an immune-driven response to sun exposure, and the symptoms usually develop a few hours later. How to tell sun allergy from sunburn

Sun allergy and sunburn can look similar after UV exposure, but a few clues help you tell them apart. Photosensitivity reactions often show as itchy, bumpy red patches that aren’t typically hot to the touch and tend to reappear in the same areas year after year. Sunburn, by contrast, usually feels warm or hot, causes more uniform redness or uneven “maps” where clothing covered the skin or sunscreen was missed, and the surface is generally smooth, sometimes with fluid-filled blisters. Either can be accompanied by fever, though this is more common with severe sunburn.
